Tilehurst Parish Council gets green light to start Neighbourhood Plan
Tilehurst Parish Council announced its intention to create a neighbourhood plan late last year, and following a lengthy consultation West Berkshire Council has now approved the area to be covered by the Tilehurst Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan.
Neighbourhood plans enable local people to have a say in the shape of development in their area and this approval means the Parish Council can now start gathering the views of people who live and work in the Parish about the future of the area, working with them to create the plan.
Speaking at a meeting earlier this year to launch the plan, Jean Gardner who chairs Tilehurst Parish Council said: “Neighbourhood planning is a new way for communities to influence the future of the places where they live and work. Local people understand the wider needs of their community and at the moment their voices aren’t being heard. A Neighbourhood Plan would address this.”
The whole community needs to be involved in the Neighbourhood Plan. The initial steering group is planning various ways for individuals, businesses and groups to have their say. The initial steering group will need to be increased and is seeking volunteers to act as facilitators to undertake key tasks, and people who can provide assistance as and when needed so that when the Plan is ready for examination it will be backed by provable evidence.

Tilehurst Parish Council serves the communities of Birch Copse, Calcot, Denefield and Westwood: a population of 15,500 covering an area of 11 square miles. Situated to the west of Reading, Tilehurst Parish extends from the A4 in the south to a few metres short of the A329 in the north. The Reading boundary forms the eastern border while its western border follows the line of the Sulham escarpment.
The Council manages four recreation grounds and three village halls. The Parish’s Sports Centre and two further pieces of land are leased to West Berkshire District Council to meet Education and Social Service needs in the local area.
